Print & Photograph Department Assistant
The Library Company of Philadelphia, an independent research library founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1731, seeks a self-motivated, organized, and flexible assistant in the Print & Photograph Department. The collections in the Print & Photograph Department include prints, photographs, drawings, watercolors, and maps focusing on American history, and in particular, the Philadelphia area, dating from the late 17th century through the early 20th centuries.
The primary responsibility of the assistant will be to coordinate rights and reproductions services for patrons seeking digital and photographic duplications and permission to publish materials from the library’s graphics and rare book collections for research, publication, and commercial use. Additional, related tasks include providing reference, answering research inquiries, helping researchers in the graphics reading room, assisting with collection processing and cataloging projects, accessioning new acquisitions, and calculating monthly statistics of patron usage of materials.
Requests for digital media outnumber requests for other reproduction formats therefore it is essential for the assistant to have proficient knowledge of Windows, image management software, and database systems. The assistant frequently interfaces with other staff members, the general public and outside vendors, and for this reason must be comfortable in an outgoing, customer-service role. Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and work independently are necessary.
The ideal candidate will have a B.A. in History, or related subject. Knowledge of 19th-century American history or Philadelphia history and culture, and experience with historical or art collections is desirable.
This is a full-time position with a salary in the upper 20s per year with excellent benefits. Please send cover letter, resume, and names of three references to Sarah Weatherwax, Curator of Prints & Photographs, at printroom@librarycompany.org or Library Company of Philadelphia, 1314 Locust Street, Philadelphia, Pa. 19107 by October 31, 2008.
