In late May 1931 Philadelphia photographer William Jennings photographed the Shelburne Hotel located on Michigan Avenue and Atlantic City’s boardwalk. Opened in 1869 as a wooden frame structure, the hotel evolved into a multi-storied brick building. The two main sections documented by Jennings were built in 1922 and 1926. Among the hotel’s amenities was hot and cold running salt water, allowing hotel guests to experience the presumed health benefits of salt water baths. The hotel was torn down in the early 1980s.
