During the Civil War, soldiers had access to a myriad of illicit materials including erotic fiction, cartes de visite, playing cards, and stereographs. But after the war, these materials raised sharp concerns among reformers and lawmakers, who launched campaigns to combat it. This lecture, with professor and author Dr. Judith Giesberg, takes a serious look at erotica in the nineteenth-century and will address the links between sex and the postwar attempts to redefine human relations.
