George D. Shubert (b. 1842), a journeyman lithographer at the firms of Jacob Haehnlen and George Breuker during 1866, compiled one of only two known diaries of 19th-century Philadelphia lithographers. The journal provides a remarkable window on the daily life of a lithographer. Shubert was active in the Lithographic Printers Union, a member of the Catholic Philapatrian Literary Institute, and involved with the volunteer Washington Hose Company.
