Thomas Gill. Selections from the Court Reports Originally Published in the Boston Morning Post, from 1834 to 1837. Boston: Otis, Broaders & Co., 1837. (Gift of Todd and Sharon Pattison)
Thomas Gill, a reporter for the Boston Morning Post, compiled this volume from several years’ experience in the Boston courts. Known for their humorous tone, Gill’s accounts brought levity to the most mundane and saddest of criminal cases. Here, he describes a hearing for a woman accused of passing counterfeit notes, noting wryly that her representation is “an enthusiastic and plausible phrenologist, but not so extensively known as a legal practitioner.”
