Lithographers, to add more tone to their work, would often apply one to three different color tint stones to a foundation drawing of black markings. Known as tinted lithographs, the prints generally had borders, sky effects, and backgrounds in the tint color(s). This view with a beige-tinted background depicts the riding school operated by Thomas Craige & Son. Located at Fourth Street above Vine Street, not far from lithographer Christopher M. Greiner (b. ca. 1809), the school was advertised as the largest of its kind in the United States in 1850.
