Wonderful Trial of Caroline Lohman, Alias Restell. New York: Wholesale and Retail Agents, [1847].
Restell was not as fortunate after her trial for second-degree manslaughter in the case of Maria Bodine, an unmarried servant who received an abortion at six months even though Restell advised the girl to board with her until full term rather than terminate the pregnancy at such a risky stage. Restell typically charged $100 for the operation, but accepted $75 from Bodine because that was all the money she could gather. Convicted, Restell spent a year in prison.
