The Panic of 1837 presented myriad opportunities for people who were clever enough to capitalize on people’s financial desperation. This work describes many of the frauds that would continue to be perpetrated on Americans throughout the rest of the century, including lottery schemes, crooked pawnbroking rackets, fortune-telling, and other confidence games.
