“Practical Experience of the Gift-Book Enterprises,” Harper’s Weekly, April 17, 1858. Merchants on buying trips to the city often fell for gift book enterprises, as lampooned in this cartoon. Characterized as “verdant” (i.e., green) countrymen, they were naive enough to think they could get a good deal, and were swindled as a result.
