Please join us at Mother Bethel AME Church for a celebratory live performance to mark the release of trombonist and educator Brent White’s new album, code-switching. It features White’s new jazz arrangements of works by the noted 19th-century African American composer and bandleader Francis (Frank) Johnson (1792–1844)—one of the leading American musicians of the pre-Civil War era. The concert performance is the culminating event of White’s Innovation Fellowship, which invited fresh engagement with a major work in the Library Company’s collection: a ca. 1820 manuscript of Johnson’s dance tunes, marches, and other compositions.
