Over a few short weeks in the winter of 1870-72, the novelist Amelia Edwards was staying in Rome while suffering from intense depression. She dispatched a series of passionate, sometimes despairing, letters to a fellow writer, Anne Hampton Brewster, with whom she had fallen hopelessly in love. The two women shared much common ground – not only professional aspirations, love for other women and a rejection of heterosexual marriage, but a quest for a surrogate mother figure, following the death of a beloved parent. The talk – ironically titled ‘Yours Everlovingly’ after a line in one of Amelia’s letters, tells of Amelia’s in fact far-from-everlasting passion for Anne Brewster; also of the relationships between the two writers’ works, and their often tragic lives.

Created in 2018, the Charlotte Cushman Society is a group of donors dedicated to recovering and sharing LGBT history and will support on-going initiatives and exploration.
