Rachel Herrmann will discuss with her co-editors the rationale for the creation of the network of scholars that gave rise to this volume, including immigration restrictions in the UK’s “hostile environment.” She will then turn from a contemporary discussion of borders to a short overview of her chapter on the commonly misunderstood economic policy of comercio libre in the Gulf South, and how it affected the Indigenous peoples interested in trading deerskins with the Spanish.
