In-Person | The American Philosophical Society, Benjamin Franklin Hall

The evening will begin with the official launch of the multi-institutional, collaborative project, The Revolutionary City: A Portal to the Nation’s Founding (www.therevolutionarycity.org). This online portal is a central hub for students, educators, scholars, and the public to learn about diverse stories of the American Revolution from the perspective of early residents of America’s revolutionary city.

At 5:30 p.m., representatives from the Library Company of Philadelphia, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the Museum of the American Revolution, the Kislak Center for Special Collection at the University of Pennsylvania, and the American Philosophical Society will talk about each institutions’ plans for the upcoming semiquincentennial.

At 6:00 p.m., the event will continue with a public lecture commemorating that pivotal event—the Declaration of Independence—by John Bidwell, Curator Emeritus at the Morgan Library & Museum, of his book, The Declaration in Script and Print: A Visual History of America’s Founding Document. In the book, Bidwell traces the fascinating history of prints and broadsides depicting the Declaration of Independence, revealing the American public’s changing attitudes toward this iconic text.
