Join Curators Sarah Weatherwax, Erika Piola, and Kinaya Hassane for Imperfect History and the Archive, a roundtable discussion, with special guest Shawn Michelle Smith, from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Smith and the curatorial team will discuss the thought processes behind and the visual materials informing the curators’ conception of the exhibition and overall project. Themes of close-looking at images and their historical context, and the cultural and racialized biases that create, read, and assemble collections of historical graphic materials will be examined.
Shawn Michelle Smith, Interim Dean of Faculty and Professor of Visual and Critical Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, is a writer, artist, and curator who studies the history and theory of photography through the lenses of race and gender. She has also contributed essays to American Art, Aperture, African American Review, Nka Journal of Contemporary African Art, and the Yale Journal of Criticism, and she has been awarded a number of fellowships, including from the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
