Philadelphia on Stone Wins Award

,

In May Curator of Prints and Photographs Sarah Weatherwax attended the annual meeting of the American Historical Print Collectors Society (AHPCS).  Held this year in Cincinnati, the group’s annual gatherings include lectures and behind the scenes tours of institutional and private print collections. During the three day meeting, the group visited the Cincinnati Museum Center, the Mercantile Library, the Public Library of Cincinnati, the Lloyd Library, and the Cincinnati Art Museum. At these various sites, attendees listened to lectures on topics as diverse as Sporting Figures in 19th-Century Prints, Audubon and the Queen City, and The Amazing Circus Poster: The Strobridge Company.

As part of the AHPCS’s Cincinnati program, the Ewell L. Newman Book Award was presented to the best publication promoting the appreciation of historical prints. This year the jury bestowed the honor on the Library Company’s publication, Philadelphia on Stone: Commercial Lithography in Philadelphia, 1828-1878. Edited by Associate Curator of Prints and Photographs Erika Piola with chapters contributed by both Erika and Sarah Weatherwax, the book was the culmination of the three year-long William Penn funded project Philadelphia on Stone which also included an online biographical dictionary of Philadelphia lithographers and a digital catalog of their works. We are grateful to have our book receive recognition from such a noteworthy organization.
