This database shows the development of popular medicine in America during the nineteenth century. The collection contains an array of printed sources, including rare books, pamphlets, trade cards, posters, and advertising ephemera aimed at the general public rather than medical professionals. Covered are key themes such as: botanic medicine, the health of women and children, homeopathy, phrenology, electrotherapy, hydrotherapy, sexual health, herbal medicine, and the rise of advertising by commercial manufacturers of medical aids. These primary sources were drawn from the collections at the Library Company of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
