Accommodations for Fellows

Fellows may arrange for their own local housing or request accommodations in one of the Library Company’s residences. Seven rental units are available: six bedrooms in the Cassatt House (a co-living environment) and one private apartment in a renovated carriage house behind the Library.

While individual study carrels or offices are not provided, fellows may make use of a shared office space, kitchen, living room, and patio in the Cassatt House whether or not they are residing there.

The Cassatt House

The Cassatt House, the Library Company’s main fellows’ residence, is located next door at 1320 Locust Street. It is a five-story townhouse attributed to the eminent Philadelphia architectural firm of Frank Furness and Allen Evans, built in 1883 for J. Gardner Cassatt (1849–1911), a financier and brother of Pennsylvania Railroad President Alexander J. Cassatt and of the artist Mary Cassatt.

The house now serves as a residential research center with simple living accommodations for short-term and long-term fellows, an eat-in kitchen and roof deck patio, elevator, a shared office for fellows, and spaces for Library Company administrative activity.

The following six rooms (all with shared bath except for the ground floor room) are available; prices subject to change:

  • A large room on the ground floor with private bath, suitable for couples ($750 per month)
  • A large room on the fourth floor facing the street ($750 per month)
  • Two medium-size rooms on the third floor and one on the fourth floor ($600 per month)
  • A small room on the third floor ($450 per month)
Irving Street apartment

For fellows who require family accommodations, the Library Company also offers an apartment in a renovated carriage house at 1317 Irving Street, located directly behind the Library.

This largely open-plan residence, located on the second floor above Library administrative offices, is approximately 1400 square feet. Fully furnished with a queen-size bed in the primary bedroom and a twin bed in a second bedroom/office, the apartment has a washer/dryer, central air conditioning, WiFi, and a full kitchen and dining area.

The Irving Street apartment is available for $1,250 per month plus a one-time cleaning fee. Preference is given to fellows wishing to stay for several months, but it may be available occasionally for shorter stays.

Accommodations for other scholars

Fellows of the Library Company and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania have first priority for housing. When space is available, other scholars who wish to access the Library Company’s collections may request accommodations. Rates are as noted above with an additional $50/month charge for non-fellows. Fellowship awards are made each spring and rooms are held for fellows until the end of May. After that, inquiries from other scholars for the period June 1 of the current year to May 31 of the following year are welcome.
