Lineage

Through four large scale paintings, Mark Thomas Gibson’s Lineage examines the proposition of “the future of humanity” proposed by Samuel Jennings’ 1792 painting Liberty Displaying the Arts and Sciences (or The Genius of America Encouraging the Emancipation of the Blacks). A public opening for Gibson’s paintings was held on October 15th, 2024.

Crania Americana/Project Obtuse

Project Obtuse includes an exhibition, Crania Americana and the Archive of Scientific Racism, curated by Paul Wolff Mitchell and on display from mid-August through October. On September 17 2024, the Library Company hosted an exhibition viewing and reception where guests had an opportunity to meet Mitchell and Jicarilla Apache artist Zachariah Julian who performed his musical composition, Project Obtuse, at the Asian Arts Initiative on September 18, 2024.

The Black Historians’ Department: The Past Belongs to You

On Wednesday, July 17, new and longtime friends joined us to celebrate the opening of the first exhibition of our Beyond Glass Cases project, The Black Historians’ Department: The Past Belongs to You.    The Past Belongs to You is on view until Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
