The Library Company of Philadelphia, founded in 1731, is an independent research library that holds one of the country’s strongest collections of books, graphics, and manuscripts that chronicle the history of American culture. Its Program in Early American Economy & Society supports advanced research in the history of American economy (including commerce, business, banking, technology, and other fields) to approximately 1850 by acquiring relevant collection materials, awarding research fellowships, organizing public and scholarly programs, and publishing monographs in its book series with Johns Hopkins University Press.
